For Will and I our big fun event for the month was a overnight get away to Chicago to run the Chicago 1/2 marathon. Once again we both felt just barely prepared for the run. Im beginning to notice a pattern here, were never ready! Our February race I chalked up my lack of training to it being winter, our March St. Louis Race I used the excuse that we decided late to run it and I didn't have enough time, and now this race I blamed all our vacations and my cold last month to not getting all the training it. The truth is its just the days of our lives right now I think. We are just busy with the boys and family trips and working around work and night shift its just hard to put in all the time required to really be race ready with everything going on. So I guess I need to quit making excuses and just be glad that Im able to run these events at all in this stage of life right now and not worry to much about the time or pace. OK back to Chicago. Will and I had a great 24 hours in the Windy City. If I was more tech savvy I would have Frank Sinatra crooning "My kind of town, Chicago..." in the background for you right now. Mom took the boys early on Friday night before we left Saturday morning. This felt like a huge bonus to have the evening freed up. We considered leaving early and driving part way but decided to stay home and have a date night. We tried out a new restaurant and went to see Jurassic World (which I had really been wanting to do!).
On Saturday we got up to Chicago and had some fun at the expo and then we weren't really sure what to do with ourselves for the evening. We ended up walking to the Miracle Mile on Michigan Ave from our hotel and back. Which was about a 3 mile round trip. Race day was pretty much what we expected hot, humid, not much wind, and a large crowd. We got it done in 2 hours and 12 minutes. (the slowest half for both of us). I was glad we stuck together and took walking breaks and didn't get too too over heated. pretty soon it was time to pack up and go home. We had fun Chicago, we'll be back and we might even bring our kids next time!
Rex and Grant:
One thing I have noticed about the boys this summer is the difference in how they make decisions. Grant is very decisive and will make a quick decision and then stick with it. Rex will take a long time to make a decision and then when he does he may change his mind 4 or 5 times before he makes his final decision and even then still be wondering about all of the other possibilities.
The boys are playing together a lot this summer for better or worse. Sometimes they get along really well and its wonderful. Sometimes no matter what they are just fighting and its a hot mess, and sometimes they are getting a long pretty well but they are being quite ornery and I have to break it up. I have found if we are busy and doing stuff we all get along pretty well. So I have been trying to go or do something almost daily, even if it is just a trip to the park in the morning it seems to keep us all sane and break up the day. Now that July is over and we have about 2 weeks before school starts I think I am finally getting the hang of this summer thing and into a routine. (better late than never I guess)
Cow appreciation Day at Chick fil A....we got all 3 of our meals free for dressing up!
Grant went and saw his first movie, The Minion Movie. Here he is....somewhere among the minions at the toy store.
Some of our adventures this month included. Peach picking at Eckerts, the movies, new parks, the Mall to ride the escalators, the transportation museum in St. Louis, VBS (for Rex), back to school shopping, a 5k run, Grandma and Grandpas house, a ventriloquist show at the library, St. Louis Botanical Gardens, icecream and snow cones, Gville Tractor museum, and lots of time at home playing and hanging out.
The boys had their first snow cones ever! They really liked them.
Exploration station at the Transportation Museum in St. Louis
Rex really liked the kitchen at recreation station
Engineer Grant
Probably the boys favorite thing at the Transportation museum was riding the pedal train. We did it quite a few times throughout the day. The first time around they both kinda got stuck and had to get pushed but by the end of they day they were pros. Here is a quick video:
Getting ready for the 5-0 5K in downtown Collinsville put on by the Collinsville PD benefiting Special Olympics. We ran it in 29 mins and ate 3 donuts along the way!
riding the train out at the Farm Tractor museum in Greenville.
Grant quote:
(Will was home with Grant and Grant started to bring the couch cushions from Rex's room all the way to the basement.)
Will: "Oh no you better not do that buddy or Mom will flip her lid when she gets home:
Grant: "well maybe when Mom gets home we can ask her if its ok so she doesn't spill her drink"
My Rexie boy had a rare visit to the drs office for a bad cough and fever he couldn't shake....still trying to get rid of the cough.
My favorite car at the Transportation Museum.
Rex picked the antique bike/motorcycle as his favorite
Grant picked the old wagon as his favorite.
Botanical Gardens. Rex, Grant, and Roman Battleson
My favorite flower....the boys were supposed to pick one each but I think they were to busy in the kids area to ever pic one.
splash pad at botanical garden. (Grant in gray trying not to get wet, Rex in green, Roman jumping off the platform)
the cool treehouse playground in the kids garden.
We are really really looking forward to the first week in August and seeing all the cousins for a few days and spending the whole week with the McQuaid gang in Greenville! And im looking forward to everyone going back to school. ha ha just kidding.....kind of. Rex doesn't start school till the 24th and Grant wont start till September so we've still got quite a bit of summer ahead of us.
