Do You Speak Rexie?

Up until this month I have been keeping track of the things Rex is doing new and accomplishing each month; rolling over, sleeping at night, new teeth, walking, and new words.  But after last month I realized it might not be realistic anymore to continue writing down every new word Rex says because he has been exploding with new words almost daily.  So I will continue to do the other stuff like how Rex has gotten 3 new teeth here in his 20th month (2 painful molars and a k9).  Instead I am going to do new phrases for a while but im sure those will start to be more common too.  This last month my favorite phrases have been, "how about", "oh boy", and "night-night".  But even with all of Rex's new words and phrases I realize that if you weren't around him all the time it might be hard to know what he was saying.  While most of his words are very clear some he has just made up that mean something to him and some he doesn't say quite right yet.  I happen to be fluent in Rexie but I find myself translating a lot to explain what he is saying.  So I thought it would be fun to test my readers knowledge and see how much Rexie they understand.  So here goes, I will give even give you multiple choice options.

1.  Who or What is Rex referring to if he says "Nee-Nee"?
     a. His Knee
     b. Trees
     c. Millie (the dog)
     d. Grandma Cindy

2. What does Rex want if he says "MmmmmNnnnMummmmm"
     a. Mommy
     b. M&Ms
     c. the Moon
     d. Nothing its just a noise he likes to make

3. What does Rex want if he says "Hain-Hain"?
    a. A Phone
    b. An Airplane
    c. Ham
    d. my Hand

4. What does Rex mean when he says "P-P"?
    a. He has gone potty
    b. Peas
    c. People
    d. None of the above

5. What does Rex want to happen if he says "TT" and "Bob" at the same time?
    a. Play with his friends Tim and Bob
    b. Go outside and blow bubbles
    c. Eat Toast and put his bib on
    d. Turn on the TV and watch Bob the Builder

6. If Rex were to request "Sal-Sa" while eating what would  you give him to eat?
   a. Applesauce
   b. Salsa
   c. Cheerios
   d. Animal Crackers

Ok how do you think you did? Lets See:
1. C-the Dog.  Nee-Nee was actually one of Rex's very first words and it has stuck.  Im still not exactly sure why the dog is Nee-Nee but I find that I now call her Nee-Nee more than I call her Amelia or Millie.

2. B-M&Ms.  Rex had an M&M at Grandma and Grandpas house over Thanksgiving and we were shocked that he learned the word for them after eating like 2 and now asks for them regularly.....and if he has eaten a good meal he usually gets one.  It is amazing how happy 1 M&M can make a little boy.

3. A-Phone.  Rex has been phone crazy forever but for some reason all of a sudden last month he started calling them Hains.  He usually puts his hand up to his ear too when asking for one.  I dont know if he is thinking about how they ring or how he uses his hands or what.  But whatever it is I have a feeling phones will be called "hain" for a while around here.

4. D-None of these.  Seriously I want to know what does Rex mean when he says "PP".  He says it fairly often and I can never figure out what he means by it.  We haven't even talked to him about potty training and all that so I dont think it has anything to do with going Pee.  At Christmas there was a Snowman on the tree he would get off a lot and always say "PP" while he had it, but that has been put away for a while now and he still says it.  Sometimes its when he is playing with something, sometimes it is just mixed in his babble, sometimes it is while he is in his highchair.  I don't know, I'm fairly fluent in Rexie but there are somethings that I haven't translated yet.

5. D-Watch Bob the Builder on TV.  In the last couple of months Rex has really gotten into wanting to watch TV.  Before it would never hold his attention but now he would sit and watch it all day if we let him. We try to limit it to 1 show 30 minutes or less a day.  Which is hard sometimes because I know if would be easier to just sit and watch TV all morning with him especially now that it is cold and we cant go outside as often.  But for now at 20 months I think 30 minutes is more than enough.  He often request, "Choo-Choo"-which is Thomas the Train, Elmo, Bob, and sometimes just "Show".

6. A-Applesauce.  He can say Apple so if he would put his Apple and Sal-sa together it might actually sound like applesauce but for now it is just Sal-sa and as long as I know what that means it works for me.

So how did you do?  If you got 3 or more congratulations you are mostly fluent in Rexie and I would probably feel OK about letting you babysit and think you two would be able to communicate.  If you got less than 3 you need to come and hang out with Rex and me more often!  It will be fun I promise and we will teach you all kinds of new words you never knew!
