September Home LIfe/School Life

This month I have decided to combine our home and homeschool review...because the more you home school the more it just becomes part of your everyday life.

So....you can't put pets in the trash can???....

Grant got very into the cyclops story and coloring page!

Grant wanted to climb to the very top of the hill...can you see him?  (dont worry no one was shooting)

Grant has Authored a new book!  If you are interested in a copy let me know, we may be able to mail one to you.

Came across a cicade exiting his shell at the park!  You dont see that everyday

silly boys...this is why I sit between them during reading time!

Grant's room got an upgrade!  A big one.  He went from a toddler bed to a Queen sized bed!

We celebrated finishing our Oceans Unit with a trip to the new Aquarium in St. Louis.  It is small but very well done.  We spent a little over an house checking it all out. There were lots of hands on exhibits the boys really enjoyed!

Then we took a trip UP, in the new St. Louis Wheel.
The boys were both nervous at first but really enjoyed it.

In history we are mostly talking about the ancient civilizations of Mesopatamia, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, but our book spent a chapter talking about early civilizations (that we don't know much about because they didn't leave behind written records) of North and South America.  We actually live about 15 minutes away from one of those Early Civilizations.  The Cahokia Mounds is believed to pre-date the American Indian tribes most of us know about by centuries.  We have been there several times before but the boys and I took an afternoon trip and climbed the famous "Monks Mound"

My neighbor gave me squash starts...and now I have some decent squash!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this one definitely is.  Lets just say it all started with Grant and his neighbor friends Haley and Khoen making a club/hangout under their pool deck they named "the Fox's Den".  They basically spent an entire Saturday under it hanging out and making it just right. Then came a plan and lots of pleading with mothers to let them spend the night out under the pool deck all night.  (both the mothers thought it was a bit of a crazy idea...but why not let them all try the following week)  So a plan was made....then Rex joined in....then Rex was sleeping on the trampoline (to be safe from bugs and coyotes)....then another neighbor girl was invited (Kennedy)....then the boys didn't want to go (she can be kinda scary sometimes)....then they decided they would try it and half our house seemed like it was packed....then finally the day came and they were all so excited, they could hardly survive till the arranged time.  Finally it was time.  And the plan was a movie inside at the neighbors and then EVERYONE was sleeping on the trampoline all night.  We kinda all thought they would be home by 11pm....but some how they ALL made it the whole night...and they are all still friends.  (and there is already talk of next years sleepover on the trampoline)
This is why we LOVE our neighborhood!

We have started studying the Brain in Science.  We got to a section on the Pituitary Gland and how it helps regulate growth....and what can happen if it isn't functioning correctly.   They talked about Robert Wadlow the tallest man to have ever lived.  At his death he was 8ft 11 in (and still growing)  Around Southern Illinois he is called the Alton Giant.  Which is only about 45 mins from our house.  The boys really liked seeing the life sized statue of him.

We talked about the origin of tea in China this week.....so of course we had tea time.  The boys both really liked it!

That's all for September.  It felt like we really got into a good rhythm with homeschool this month and had lots more good days than bad.  Of course their were a few days where I completely questioned everything I was doing, but then other days where I felt completely sure this was what I was mean to be doing and why didn't I start sooner!  We area all VERY VERY much looking forward to vacation coming up at the beginning of the month...not to the Gulf Shores as originally planned (thanks Hurricane Sally) but to the Smoky Mtn (area) of Tennessee!
