Grants Story

After I had Rex I took the time to sit down and blog all the details of his labor and delivery.  Looking back im so glad I did that because there are many small details that I have forgotten and only remember by re-reading it now.  So I have been really wanting to sit down and do the same thing for Grants birth, however I have been finding that it is a little harder this time to find a free minute.  But today both boys are actually napping at the same time and I feel that I have enough energy to not nap with them today so lets see if I can remember anything now?

I think Grant's labor story really started sometime on Sunday April 1st.  We went to church that morning and then after lunch and Rex's nap we decided to go and stock up on some groceries for the week ahead.  I had been hoping I would have gone into labor already since on Monday I would be 40 weeks.  But since I hadn't I thought I better go ahead and get some groceries since it looked like I might have to make a few more meals before he arrived.  Once we got home from our shopping it was dinner time but I was not hungry at all, in fact I was feeling very nauseous.  I thought maybe I had let me stomach get too empty so I had a piece of toast to see how it would settle.  Well it didn't, I kept feeling worse and worse until later in the evening about 9pm I started to throw up.  I was hoping maybe it was just something I had eaten for lunch and now that it was gone I would feel better, well I didn't.  I kept throwing up about every hour until about 3am.  I started to get worried about being dehydrated so I chugged water as much as I could.  Once it stopped I was able to get a little sleep but not much and Will had to work the next morning so my mom came over to help watch Rex for me for the day.  I was able to sleep a few hours and get up and by lunch on Monday I ate a few things and was feeling much better.  I told my Mom at one point once I got Rex down for a nap she could probably go on home, but she said she would stay till Will got home from work.

So Mom and I were both relaxing on the couches in our living room during Rex's nap and I started having some lower back pain cramping kinda  feelings.(probably around 3pm)  I started to think, OH NO,  now the flu is going to wreak havoc on the other end of my body!  I was also having some occasional contractions but nothing that seemed organized and I had been having them for the past week so I wasn't to worried about it.  After about an hour of that I realized the cramps were actually kinda starting to coincide with my contractions and they were starting to be more and more regular.  So I started timing it all and after about 30 minutes I realized I was having contraction about every 3-5 minutes.  I was still kinda hesitant to say I was in actual labor, but after about another 30 minutes of all that I realized I really was in labor!!  So I called Will and told him it was time.  Luckily he was able to get off right away and come home.  Also Mom was already at our house and she had planned ahead and packed her over night bag, just in case.  So by 5:30 we were headed to the hospital.  Once we got checked in and up to my room they did an initial check at about 6:15 and I was 4cm and 90% effaced so they said they would call my Dr. and let him know.  I was planning to have a natural delivery again this time but I was also feeling tired from my lack of sleep the night before and not sure how much energy I had if things went long into the night.  After about an hour and a half they had gotten an IV plug in me (on the 3rd attempt!), drawn my blood, and had me sign many papers for what if scenarios.  At this point my contractions were really hurting and I told Will I think Im going to have to get the epidural I cant do this all night.  So the nurse came in to check me and said I had to have an IV first of some meds because I had tested positive for the Strep B test they do.  When she checked me I was at 8cm!  And honestly I was completely relieved because at least my pain made sense, I was in transition.  At that point I said ok I can do this.  After that I think things get kind blurry for me because it all happened so fast.  It wasn't long before I was starting to feel like I wanted to push but my Dr. wasn't there, in fact no Dr was there.  They had paged the hospital on call Dr. but he wasn't there yet either.  He finally arrived and I thought ok now I can push, but then they said my Dr. was in the parking lot and to wait.  Well that is easier said than done but I did and once he got there I started pushing.  The waiting may have been harder on Will at that point than me, I was holding onto him for dear life and screaming through each contraction.  I didn't think about it at the time but later Will told me I was screaming directly in his ear!  Poor Will.  I think I only pushed through about 5-6 contractions and the next thing I knew they were telling me not to push.  I looked up and there was Grants beautiful head!  I was seriously in shock!  It took almost 3 hours of pushing with Rex and here was Grant in about 5 minutes!  He was quickly brought up to my chest and waiting arms to hold.  I had forgotten how amazing it is to hold that little new life for the first time in your arms, it made all the pain of the last 6 hours, the nurses swarming around, and the Dr. stitching me up fade away and it was just me and Will and our perfect little baby boy.  Grant Edward was named after a Great Grandpa on each side of the family.  He was born at 8:45pm, weighed in at 7lbs 9 oz, and measured 20 inches.
